Write about your community. Talk about it.

Did you know that you can reach hundreds of people within a few hours with as little as $10 of Facebook advertising? Even if only 5% of them eventually join that would be less than $1 each. Some of them may bring friends or family.

Brian Cabena

Brian used to enjoy listening to the classical music broadcasts on the Australian Broadcasting Commission radio station.

However the government decided to broadcast the proceedings of their parliament on that ABC station.

The ABC rearranged their radio program schedule to accommodate the government’s direction. Now instead of playing complete works of classical music, the only played “short excerpts” of classical music.

Brian was not willing to accept that. He spoke to his local government member. He persisted. He put forward the idea of having a classical music radio station. He was told all the AM radio band is fully occupied and there is no room for another station. His suggestion that the government allocate frequencies on the 88 – 108 Mhz band that was used in other countries for FM radio broadcasting was also rejected.

Before 3MBS moved

In 1968 Brian wrote a letter to the Melbourne Age newspaper inviting people to a meeting in Kew town hall about classical music broadcasts. 200 people turned up. Brian had created a community which eventually caused the Australian government to grant it a licence to transmit FM radio broadcasts.

Not only had Brian and his Melbourne Broadcasting Society community opened up the FM radio broadcast band in Australia. They had also demonstrated their ability to competently manage a community radio station and the the Australian government policies now allowed for community broadcasting in Australia.
